The Gila County Landfills accepts 47,000 tons of refuse yearly.
Recycling and diversion programs. In the last five years, 1,650 tons of paper have been diverted from the landfill and hauled to a recycler in Scottsdale. Paper recycling bins are located at Fry's, Court House, Broad Street in Globe-across from VFW, Tonto Basin, WInkelman, Hayden, Globe Schools, Mt. Turnbull Sanitation Yard in San Carlos, recently added Payson locations of Wal-Mart and Green Valley Park. 26.3 tons of discarded computers were hauled to an electronics recycler. Bikes discarded in the landfill are sent to Department of Corrections for refurbishing and distribution to needy children. 87 bikes were distribued in the County during Christmas of 2007. 1,200 tons of metal are recycled annually. 800 car batteries 5,471 gallons of used motor oil 42,000 tires 20 thousand gallons of Household Hazardous Products were dropped off at our ADEQ sponsored collection days in Globe and Payson. Greenwaste in Payson is removed to a biomass facility. Greenwaste at Russell Gulch is diverted, chipped and composted.
Community Service Projects.
- In partnership with Gila County, ADEQ, Globe Clean and Beautiful and the San Carlos EPA, 8,000 tires were collected in San Carlos and recycled.
- 26 tons of debris was cleaned up in an illegal dump site in Irene Wash.
- Free appliance discard days are held twice a year at the landfills.
