RYE (June 30, 2013) – The American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter opened a shelter early Sunday morning in Payson for people evacuated due to an uncontained fire Saturday night in Rye.
Red Cross volunteers started setting up cots and blankets for overnight stays around 1 a.m. Sunday inside the old gymnasium at Payson High School, located at 514 W. Wade Lane, Payson, AZ 85541. Evacuated residents are encouraged to come to the Red Cross shelter for meals, snacks, water and coffee, and they also can receive assistance from Red Cross nurses and mental health volunteers.
Between 20 and 30 people were evacuated around 9 p.m. Saturday when a fire broke out behind All Bikes Sales, located off Highway 87, about 10 miles south of Payson. The automotive salvage yard is sandwiched between two mobile home parks, and the fire has destroyed at least one mobile home.
Evacuated residents wanting to reconnect with loved ones are urged to register through the Red Cross Safe and Well website at www.safeandwell.org. Those wishing to make donations to the Red Cross can do so online at www.redcross.org/donate or by calling 1-800-733-2767.
