State Honors Former President Gerald R. Ford

PHOENIX – Governor Janet Napolitano today announced that she has declared Tuesday, January 2, 2007 to be a statewide day of mourning for former President Gerald R. Ford, in keeping with the national day of mourning declared by President Bush.

"President Ford took over the leadership of our nation at a difficult time in history," said Governor Napolitano. "His level head and even-handedness brought us through that time and is his legacy."

President Ford passed away on Tuesday, December 26, 2006 at the age of 93.

Ceremonies will begin today and are expected to continue through Wednesday, January 3, 2007. President Ford’s body is expected to arrive in Washington on Saturday and remain there until Tuesday. Service and interment will take place on Wednesday near Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Flags will remain lowered for a period of thirty days and will be raised at sunset on Wednesday, January 24, 2007.
