Hepatitis A

You need this vaccine if you have a specific risk factor for hepatitis A virus infection (see below) or you simply wish to be protected from this disease.  The vaccine is usually given as 2 doses, 6-18 months apart.

You are at risk for hepatitis A virus infection if you
• live in a community where there have been high rates of hepatitis A*
• travel to areas outside the U.S., Western Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand**
• are a man who has sex with men
• use street drugs
• have a blood clotting factor disorder
• have chronic liver disease or hepatitis C
• work with hepatitis A in a research laboratory or with primates infected with hepatitis A virus
• are a household member (new parent or sibling) or other close personal contact (e.g., grandparent or other extended family member, caregiver, or regular babysitter) of an international adoptee recently arriving from a country with high or intermediate prevalence of hepatitis A.**
* Some American Indian, Alaska Native, and Pacific Islander communities and some religious communities have high rates of hepatitis A. Check with your healthcare professional or local health department for more information.

Hepatitis B


You need this vaccine if you have a specific risk factor for hepatitis virus infection (see below) or you simply wish to be protected from this disease.  The vaccine is given as a 3-dose series (dose #1 now, followed by dose #2 in 1 month, and dose #3, usually given 5 months after dose #2)
Risk Factors for Hepatitis B

Remember, hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for those 18 years of age and younger and for anyone who seeks protection from hepatitis B virus infection. The vaccine is also recommended for those with risk factors. You are at risk for hepatitis B virus infection if you
Age and Health
• live with a person who has life-long hepatitis B
• have end-stage kidney disease or will be on kidney dialysis
• have chronic liver disease
• have HIV infection
• have sought care in a clinic for a sexually transmitted disease

Travel, Occupation, and Family History
• travel outside of the U.S. to areas with intermediate or high rates of hepatitis B*
• are a healthcare or public safety worker who is exposed to blood
• are a staff member or client in an institution for the developmentally disabled

Other
• inject street drugs
• are a sex partner of a person with hepatitis B
• have had more than one sex partner during a 6-month period
• are a man who has sex with men
*Geographic areas with intermediate and high rates of hepatitis B:

Africa: all countries

East Asia: all countries

Eastern Europe and Northern Asia: all countries except Hungary

South Asia: all countries except Sri Lanka

Southeast Asia: all countries

Australia and the South Pacific: all countries and territories except Australia and New Zealand

Middle East: all countries except Cyprus

Western Europe: Greece, Malta, Portugal, and Spain and indigenous populations of Greenland

North America: Alaska Natives and indigenous populations of Northern Canada

Central America: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Panama

South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela, and the Amazonian areas of Colombia and Peru

Caribbean: Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turcs and Caicos
 


Varicella (Chickenpox)


If you never had chickenpox or you were vaccinated but only received 1 dose, talk to your healthcare provider about whether you need this vaccine.


Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)

You need at least 1 dose of MMR if you were born in 1957 or later.  You  may also need a 2nd dose.  Consult your healthcare provider to determine your risk for infection and your need for this vaccine.
