Folic Acid Distribution Program
Folic acid is a B vitamin used to make new cells in our bodies. If a woman has enough folic acid in her body before she is pregnant, it can help prevent major birth defects of her baby’s brain and spine. Because these birth defects happen in the first few weeks, often before a woman even knows that she is pregnant, it is important to take folic acid every day before pregnancy. |
The Gila County Vitamin Distribution Program is available to any woman of childbearing age, regardless of income. In addition to education about the benefits of folic acid, participants receive a supply of multivitamins that contain 400 micrograms of folic acid. |
